i2eye design studio wished all of its clients and close friends a merry Christmas by designing a handmade card this year. We went the extra mile to give something uniquely festive and new. We hope everyone likes the design and that the loose glitter is found in the most unlikely of places throughout the December month.

Merry Christmas from i2eye design studio and we wish you the very best for 2012.

Our project for Laings has seen an ongoing relationship which has grown and grown and has provided them with a range of design material and promotions items that will stand them in great stead for years to come…

Home Page

Continuing our work with Laings, Edinburgh’s premium kitchens and bathrooms provider, we were asked to implement a dedicated website for their Edinburgh showroom. The reason being they already had an Inverurie based showroom and website, which is fine for up north; but a local online presence was seen to be required. So as the team in Edinburgh are rather hands on in all their marketing efforts a WordPress solution was advised so designated members of staff can use the website day to day themselves. A fullscreen layout was advised so as to use the photography of the showroom to the best of its ability in addition to being more descriptive to prospective customers showing the high quality of products Laings offers.

Staff Profiles

The website presents large images very well, immersing the visitor in world of Laings high end luxury kitchens and bathrooms. Photography and the fullscreen layout is uncompromising when the “View” button is pushed. This unique functionality hides the all the information from the website and leaving the photography for all to see. The website does however present company staff and product information very well. At the same time the three product ranges of: kitchens, bathrooms and bathrooms can always found on the left. Additionally a company news feed can always been seen on the right so core information is no more than a click away.

Product Page

Display of kitchens and bathrooms were limited to a “flavor” as many customers prefer to visit the company and speak to the staff before making such a considerable purchase. As a result the range which the company offers was bread crumbed as listed single expandable images that would then qualify the product and the company better. This had the thinking that the website visitor would then be converted in to a showroom visitor or telephone caller.

Contact Page

Finally and importantly the flow of the website to the company contact details is well considered as they are constantly shown on all pages of the website. Social media and secondary pages are accessed using the fly-up menu found at the bottom of the website. This is a dynamic area that can be used to expand the website content and external links – here we have used manufacturers of the kitchens and bathroom Laings offers to it customers. We would urge you to visit the website for yourself and become a visitor to personally experience what we’ve done for Laings Edinburgh and how we’ve significantly improved their online presence in the capital.

To visit the website Click here…

Wide view of the Laings leaflet with its entrance design theme.

The paper and the leaflet background was crafted to show an anthracite texture.

The front doors open to present the products of Laings.

The main title was styled to give a luxury aesthetic.

Optimal typeface was used to continue the luxury typography.

Images are inset and styled using an illustrated frames providing depth.

The styled Trajan typography works well with the Optimal typeface.

The rear of the leaflet displays a map, contact info and image of the showroom. There’s also
designated area at the top for tailoring of the leaflet using designed Avery stickers.

As like the origins of the Creative Science Company design project I met Nick Oswald, the founder of Bitesize Bio, at the same Nexxus Scotland event as Lee. He was actually a speaker at the event, which was regarding the diverse options afforded to graduating scientists.

Bitesize Bio is an interesting company which maintains and advances an informative website for laboratory life scientists. It publishes relevant articles and on-line presentations as well as advertising scientific products and services.

i2eye design studio was tasked with producing Bitesize Bio’s media pack which relays how companies can advertise on the website, the advertising opportunities and the associated benefits as well as the costs of doing so.

In addition to the inside pages we created conceptual inside covers which are composed from the many article titles on the Bitesize Bio website. The design then imposes the company logo onto these with colour. A copy of this was also provided to the company as an A3 poster.

The design was to be delivered as a digital document as many sponsors are in different countries, the company is digital in nature and the prices can fluctuate.

The studio was recently added to the Edinburgh BioQuarter website which completes all possible listing for science in Scotland. We were listed under the “Design, Media and PR services section. We are also listed on the Life Sciences Scotland Directory and Nexxus Scotland Directory. At each of these there’s our company bio and link to our website. From our company website we can see how many referrals we get via Google Analytics and there has been significant activity.

However we’ve yet to directly receive a contact queries or design project from this established presence. This is rather unfortunate as the studio has lots to offer the busy or commercial life scientist: everything from poster design to infographics to print management.

So we hope this new online presence sees our phone ring and an interesting and challenging project on the other end.

Google+: Since our first article on social media a new kid is on the block and looking for some of the social media action and when that kid is Google the others should listen. Google+ is looking to take social media share from the likes of Facebook and is a serious rival as its members can then enjoy an eco-system Facebook can’t offer – but is Google+ any good? Well the platform offers the familiar profile options typical to all social media. However where they’re unique is with their “Circles” function, which allows you to group your contacts and work collaboratively. The studio does have an account but we think it needs time to mature and properly integrate with the other products from Google. There’s lots of potential but Facebook has got their first and it shows but there’s still all to play for when it comes to the ever growing mobile device markets.

Visit Google Plus…

Tumblr: This micro-blogging platform is what web 3.0 is all about. The free website lets its registered users post pretty much anything from: text, images, quotes, links, video and audio. This small yet personal amount of increasing content can then by followed by other users and they in turn can be followed. The very simple website provides anyone with internet access to share anything they want with anyone else. The site goes on to provide a collection of your posts preserving your media for all time. This is a great piece of social media for those with a little time, don’t need a full blogging engine like WordPress yet still want to share their interests. The website also spans all online devices perfectly and greatly benefits from doing so as result of smartphone cameras and microphones.

Visit Tumblr…

Foursquare: A second good example of how the web is liberating people and in Foursquare’s case – consumers. This social media works with smartphones allowing its registered users to identify themselves at a certain location listed on Foursquare, or they themselves can add it. The visitor can then await their friends and or rank the business for others to see. This is pretty much dynamic service feedback in the palm of your hand. But it does connect with Facebook and Twitter for an additional social aspect as your friends can know where you are, then can choose to meet up with you or just know what you like and where.

Visit Foursquare…

eBlogger: Now we move into the more substantial social media world with full online blogging. eBlogger is the blogging service offered free by Google. As like Tumblr, this is a professional place to present your own media although with blogging these become longer, better crafted and can use multiple images or even videos. This service is yet another addition to the Google eco-system which it hopes will reach a critical mass to allow its customers to live and work in their browser.

Visit eBlogger…

WordPress: This is another, yet different, blogging platform than eBlogger. WordPress has taken the form of two functions in that it offers the publication of blogs and secondly it can provide the framework for entire websites. In fact the i2eye design studio website and some of our clients are using the WordPress CMS system – just look at our main story. However its blogging service is a different beast as you are required to procure your own hosting albeit made easy by WordPress. But the big benefit over eBlogger is the style of the blogs have significant scope due to the WordPress community supplying a huge range of styled themes. This is why those who want an individual voice choose WordPress. And as mentioned that individual online presence can evolve to become full websites within which the blog engine becomes the “News” page.

Visit WordPress…

RSS: Really Simple Syndication is an XML powered function that organises many different blog articles so that they come in as feeds. This then allows a person interested in consuming their chosen information at their leisure instead of being swamped or their time taken up searching for what they want. In fact the next time you’re visiting an information heavy website look out for the RSS logo as show above..

Visit RSS…

Digg & Reddit: These are similar and little known social media that claim to be the front page of the entire internet. Within these sites information is added to the feed of the website but what’s different is that this information is then ranked by its readers. This ranking then either “ups” or “downs” the information so its given democratic importance levels – it’s that simple.

Visit Digg…

Stumble Upon & Delicious: These are the final social media, in this list, that are involved largely with words. However these websites work by allowing people to “bookmark” websites and webpages so good content and interesting content is more easily found by everyone, especially your friends or shared groups.

Vimeo & YouTube: To round of this second part to social media online video has to be addressed and these two need no introduction. We’ve put Vimeo before YouTube because as designers we like Vimeo more as it embeds better and is far more mobile friendly, at least for the moment. These two social media have pretty much revolutionized the internet as your life simply isn’t long enough to watch half the stuff on either of them. Not unless you want to see your children grow up. These social media also give a free option to describe products and services very well on your website, as well as giving a much greater purpose to the camera to your smartphone.

We really enjoyed working on these regular publications as it was a bit of an adrenaline rush to get everything finalised and signed off with the editor before we took over and went to print.

The covers had to be eye catching and visually congruent to their subject.

Full page company spreads we rare so we relished the opportunity to be more creative.

Editorial design and content saw a six column structure with DIN as the main body typeface.

We sourced much of the images used in the journals, something of a strength in our studio.

We made the most of large images but always in combination with the narrative of the article.

Sometimes articles had lots of small images and changing focus, but we handled these very well.

The structure change was joined with tabulation and styling changes to the tables and graphics.

These changes improved the editorial design and made the issues quicker to produce.

The saving in time allowed for more attention to detail and insightful infographics.

Illustration was used sparingly do to the scientific and business nature of the journal readership.

Overall i2eye design is really pleased to have worked on the editorial design of these journals.

A range of stationery items were produced and adhered to the branding of CSC Ltd.

Double sided business cards with bold Avenir typography was used to create the design.

The size and placement of the 3D logo was modest and central.

The use of a blue gradient anchors the design with the gradient creating movement.

The logo was centred and a generous page area afforded to the company letterhead.

The letterhead footer presents all required and legal information.

The compliment slip is a good example of the use of Avenir with its modern style.

A DL envelope was provided to complete the business stationery set.

To market the companies product, a micro-organism, an A5 flyer was produced using the companies colors. Furthermore as water companies are likely customers for this micro-organism the artwork was styled accordingly with water droplets and budding visuals.

Company website homepage with image gallery and immediate links to their products.

Information pages have flexibility in their structure and with side bars if required.

The shop is presented in a list order and the product payment supported by PayPal.

During the recent Edinburgh Science Festival the “Enlightenment” photography project was made an event just off Princess Street. There were several productions of David McIntyre’s images showing science related imagery in large scale and with new perspective. The event was sponsored by the Moredun Research Center and the Scottish Government.

The space was rather inviting and each installation was double sided.

The exhibition provided an easy and welcomed break to shopping or the bustle of the city.

Large and direct images were created from a photoshoot which had the aim of blurring the lines between attending college as a student, and being a student who could be interested in physical exercise and sport.

One of two posters for use as canteen tray inserts. The models were shot in the canteen and were instructed to look down the lens for a direct eye contact effect.

The second poster for the canteen was less direct but with the juxtaposition far more clear.

A bright and inviting poster was also created for use throughout the college and presents the choices that the college sport center can provide.
